Top Tips for Baby-Proofing Your Home
Share
Welcoming a baby into your home is one of life’s greatest joys but once they start crawling and exploring, it’s amazing how quickly the everyday becomes a potential obstacle course!
Baby-proofing doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a few simple steps, you can create a safe, happy space that gives your little one freedom to explore and gives you peace of mind.
Here are our top baby-proofing tips!
1. Get Down to Their Level
One of the best ways to start? Get on your hands and knees and see the world from your baby’s perspective. You’ll spot dangling wires, sharp corners, or tempting shiny objects you may never have noticed before!
2. Secure Furniture and TVs
As babies learn to pull themselves up, furniture becomes a climbing frame. Anchor bookshelves, chest of drawers and TVs securely to the wall to prevent tipping.
Top Tip: Many DIY stores in the UK sell anti-tip straps and wall anchors – they’re quick to fit and offer extra peace of mind.
3. Cover Sharp Corners
Coffee tables, fireplace hearths and other low furniture can be tricky once little heads start moving at speed! Use corner protectors or soft foam padding to reduce the risk of bumps.
4. Safety Gates Are Your Friend
Install safety gates at the top and bottom of the stairs, and across rooms you’d prefer to keep baby-free (like the kitchen or utility room). Look for gates that meet British safety standards (BS EN 1930:2011).
5. Mind the Sockets and Cords
Thankfully, UK plug sockets are some of the safest in the world, but it’s still a good idea to:
Keep unused sockets covered
Tuck away electrical cords
Avoid dangling blind or curtain cords - use a cord tidy or cleat hook out of baby’s reach
6. Lock Away the Dangerous Stuff
Cleaning products, medicines, sharp kitchen tools – anything hazardous should be:
- Stored high up, or
- Locked away in cupboards with childproof locks
Even seemingly harmless things like nappy cream or laundry pods can be risky if swallowed, so keep them out of reach.
7. Bathroom Safety
The bathroom deserves special attention:
Always empty the bath immediately after use
Keep toilet lids closed (and consider a lid lock)
Store razors, toiletries, and medications in a secure cabinet
Extra Tip: A non-slip mat is a great idea for when baby starts standing and toddling in the tub.
8. Keep It Flexible
Baby-proofing isn’t one-size-fits-all. As your little one grows and becomes more mobile, their environment will need to adapt too. What’s safe one week might not be the next – and that’s okay!
You’ve Got This
Baby-proofing is all about creating a space where your child can explore safely, without constant “no’s” or stress. It’s not about perfection it’s about making your home work for your family.
You’re doing an amazing job keeping your little one safe while letting them learn and grow. One cupboard lock at a time!
